Juan Mata and Antonio Martial got the goals as Manchester United held firm to keep out a determined Watford side with a 2-0 win on Saturday in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
But Jose Mourinho’s charges remain sixth in the standings with 48 points from 25 games, while Watford lie in 12th spot for now.
Mata netted United in front in the 32nd minute, before Frenchman Martial sealed victory for the Red Devils.
But it was not a walk in the park Premier League’s most successful side as they had to deal with some threats from the visitors.
And afterwards, Mourinho, of course, was delighted with the win, even though he acknowledged it was a difficult outing for his side.
“We needed to win. Sixteen games unbeaten is an amazing record but it would be the perfect record with two or three fewer draws at home. It was a difficult match and a very important win for us.
And the Portuguese was impressed by Martial’s performance on the day.
“Martial deserves the chance. He has worked harder than ever in the last two weeks in the way I like – silence but hard.”
On the other side, Watford’s goalie, Heurelho Gomes, indicated that his side’s failure to get into the game in time was responsible for the defeat.
“We didn’t show up in the first half. Second half was much better, we competed with them but by then it was too late.
“We are disappointed but when we lose we lose together.
“We are still looking up the table because we have quality. When we show up we show we compete with anyone,” he concluded.
