An Area Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced Hassan Joshua, a welder, to two months imprisonment over a breach of trust and cheating.
Hassan, who resides at Nimasa Estate Gwarimpa-Abuja, was given the sum of N430,000 to construct a water tank and door, but instead paid the money into the money-doubling scheme, Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox (MMM).
Zannah Dalhatu, the prosecutor, told the court that one Fagbo Tubosun had reported the matter to the police on Feb. 7.
”After collecting the money he refused to do the work and he absconded to an unknown destination.” he said.
The Judge, Abubakar Sadiq, who ordered the convict to pay 430,000 to the complainant, also gave Hassan N10,000 option of fine.
MMM, which is a mutual aid funding network of ordinary people helping each other, froze the accounts of all of its participants December of last year under the guise of system upgrades.
Though the scheme resumed Jan 13, a day before its promised return date of Jan. 14, participants still find it difficult to gain access to their funds.
