Rangers, one of Nigeria’s flagbearers at the Caf Champions League, have received a boost in their quest to be crowned African club champions.
The Enugu-based team has been promised N1m for each goal they get past their Algerian opponents, JS Saoura, when both sides meet on Friday.
The promise was made by Charles Ugwu, a team supporter, while addressing the officials and players before they took off for Algiers for the first round first leg match of the competition.
Ugwu, who is the traditional ruler of Igugu community in Enugu State, said he expected a resounding victory from the team.
“I recall that when you were in a good position to win the 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title, I made a similar promise and you did not disappoint.
“Though I was not around then, but I redeemed my pledge, and it is my privilege to now savour the sweetness of that victory with you.
“I am making a similar promise now. For every goal you score in Algeria, I will give N1 million,” he said.
He said while the club seemed to be presently finding it difficult in the current NPFL season, the club’s fans were still sure they would rise to the occasion in Algiers.
Going on, he congratulated them on having ex-player and coach Christian Chukwu with them. This, he believes, stands them in good stead as Chukwu is a veteran and not new to the games.Ugwu said Algeria was not a strange land for Christian Chukwu, who is at the head of the delegation as the team’s General Manager.
Moreover, he is quite used to Algerian opponents.Ugwu said Algeria was not a strange land for Christian Chukwu, who is at the head of the delegation as the team’s General Manager.
However, he asked the players not to disappoint but rise to the occasion as Rangers is more than just a club to the fans, it is a “way of life.”
Rangers go into this year’s competition looking to win it for the first time in the club’s history. The closest they came was in 1975 when they made it to the finals before losing to Hafia FC of Guinea.
