Jonathan Richard grabbed a brace as Wikki Tourists came from a goal down to record a stunning 3-1 win over Ifeanyiubah in one of Sunday’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) games.
The Nnewi-based side had taken an early lead through Prince Aggreh before quick strikes from Richard and a late goal from Mohammed Guda completed a turnaround for the Bauchi Elephant.
The win has lifted Wikki from the relegation zone to eighth in the standings with seven points from five games, while the Anambra Warriors have dropped into the ocean of relegation with four points from similar number of games.
A heavy hush took over the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa stadium when the visitors opened scoring five minutes into the game through Prince Aggreh.
But the silence did not last beyond the 35th minute when Jonathan Richard curled in the ball from outside the box, beating Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal and sending the home fans into rapture.
Four minutes later, Richard struck again to give the Bauchi Elephant the lead, while Guda’s third put the game beyond the visitors which left coach of the side, Baba Ganaru, highly impressed.
“With what I have seen today, it means the team is ready to prosecute its continental compaign and I am happy.
He, however, appealed to supporters of the side to be patient with the team as he believes Wikki would improve with each game.
“I want to call on our fans and supporters to be patient. That is the game of football and we must exercise some restraint to succeed,” Ganaru said.
