24-year-old Iris Mittenaere who represented France at the 65th Miss Universe pageant in Philippines was crowned Miss Universe on Monday.
Mittenaere who is pursuing a degree in dental surgery, said she hoped more countries would open up their border for refugees.
The first and second runner up are Miss Haiti, Raquel Pelissier, 25 and Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar, 23 respectively.
Miss France, who was born in the northern French city of Lille, beat 85 other contestants in the Philippines, in the 65th edition of the three-hour show that concentrated on diversity and women empowerment in conquering life struggles.
Miss Universe: Mittenaere Makes History
Mittenaere recorded the second Frenchwoman to win the title in the pageant’s history and the first winner from her continent Europe, in more than a decade.
“I was very surprised I won, I feel blessed,”the 24-year-old said, whose competition profile had described her goal as advocating for dental and oral hygiene if she won.
Having clinched the crown, Mittenaere said she wanted to go beyond her competition profile and promote education for children and young women.
“Miss Universe was a dream, every girl wants to be Miss Universe … the stage is amazing, everything is amazing,” she said, beaming throughout her victory news conference.
“I want to help people, I want to understand people, I want to meet people, that’s why this is a dream for me.”
