Former world number one Rafael Nadal booked a quarter-final place at the Australian Open with a hard-fought win over Gael Monfils.

The ninth seed beat his French opponent 6-3 6-3 4-6 6-4.

Up next for the Spaniard is a date against third seed Milos Raonic, who edged out another Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut.

Both will take to the court on Wednesday.

Earlier

Canada’s Raonic, the highest seed left in the men’s singles, was 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-4 6-1 better than Agut.

Grigor Dimitrov, meanwhile, beat injury-hit Denis Istomin to progress. He will next confront David Goffin, who progressed ahead of eighth seed Dominic Thiem.
