Hostilities resume in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) as midweek games are to be played all across the country. 10 games in all would be played, including derbies and clashes of old foes with kickoff time being 4pm everywhere. Herein are the previews of some of the games.
FC IfeanyiUbah vs MFM FC
FC IfeanyiUbah come to this game on the back of a controversial opening match that cost them 3 points and N9.1m. They would be bursting to kickstart their season and stay in touch with the league pacesetters. The Anambra Warriors have one of the best home forms in the NPFL, winning their last five games on the trot.
MFM FC arrive Nnewi as league leaders after putting 3 goals past Niger Tornadoes in the opening game of the season. In a professional display reminiscent of Mourinho’s 2005 Chelsea team, the Olukoya Boys did the necessary with no frills.
This is the third meeting between both sides with MFM having the better record having won one and drawn the other.
MFM midfielder, Oshobe, in a chat with Concise News Global said: ” we know a win will keep us on the top of the table. We are not just here to play but to get maximum points.”
Sunshine Stars vs Shooting Stars (3SC)
This match has been marred in the last two seasons by player and fans brawls. This led to the tweet below by the 3SC twitter handle:
The Akure Gunners lost their first game away to Enyimba and would not want to lose at home to a direct rival.
Both teams have met 6times in the last 3 seasons with each team recording 3 wins each. There is no middle ground with these two teams. It is all in or nothing for them.
In an interview with the LMC, 3SC coach, Fatai Amoo, said he was confident and expects his team to win the game.
Lobi Stars vs Kano Pillars
As is the case with most teams in the NPFL, Lobi Stars are imperious at home. The opening day loss to 3SC came as no surprise as their away form is as poor as their home form is great.
I, however, expect a home win even though they play a rejuvenated Kano Pillars.
As much as the strength of the Pillars team cannot be ascertained as yet as it is early days, they are perennial title contenders. and dominated the league for a few years in recent memory.
The game would be full of chances as both sides prefer the passing game to just hoofing the ball and hoping for the best.
Niger Tornadoes vs ABS FC
A 3nil loss to MFM FC was definitely not in the plans of Coach Bala Abubakar and his boys. However, they can take positives from their second-half display.
With five wins in the last five and conceding just twice, ABS FC has quite a herculean task ahead of them. Added to this is the need and desire to make amends for the loss to MFM FC.
Speaking to Wilfred, Niger Tornadoes striker, Concise News Global was told that the players were in camp and ready. He said the mood was not downcast as the loss to MFM has been shrugged off.
“We are preparing and building everyday on our performances,” he said, “we will stick to the plan of the coach and will be victorious.”
ABS arrive with a boost from their 3-1 win over Akwa United on Saturday. They have just returned to the top flight after spending 2 seasons in the lower league.
