As part of preparations for the new Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) season starting on the 14th of January, Enyimba, yesterday, played a friendly against Rivers United in their adopted new ground: the UJ Esuene stadium, Calabar.

The game which ended 0-0 was a chance for both coaches to give their players a run out and also get them match-fit for the rigours of a new season.

The team coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, was not satisfied with the performance. He rued the wastefulness of his attackers who missed glaring chances. He believed winning the league would be hard if the attackers kept missing the type of chances they missed today.

The club chairman, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, expressed his delight and appreciation at the reception his players got from the home fans.

He appealed for continual support from the fans and promised that the players would give them something to share.

He added that benefits would accrue to the Crossriver people due to the presence of the former league champions.

In a bid to ingratiate the club with the fans, he said: “I know we are called Enyimba of Aba, but now we are Enyimba of Calabar.”

“It will not be nice for us to feel that we are not at home. We ask for support and we will make you proud.”

Enyimba host Sunshine Stars on Sunday in their first match of the 2016/2017 season.
