The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Saturday announced his resignation as general overseer of the church headquartered in Ogun State Nigeria.
Concise News gathers that the retirement is in compliance with the new legal requirement set up by the Financial Regulations Council guiding all registered churches, mosques, civil society organizations (CSOs).
The law stipulates that leaders of the above listed entities have a maximum period of twenty years to lead their organizations. Also, on retirement, they are not permitted to hand over to any member of their families.
The retirement announcement which took place during the RCCG Annual Ministers Thanksgiving also include the unveiling of a successor in Pastor Obayemi, as the new General Overseer.
Other appointments are the appointments of Pastor Funsho Odesola, as the new Church Secretary and Pastor Adeyokunu, as the new Church Treasurer.
Adeboye who stated that his vision is to put a church within five minutes of every person on earth will be 75 years old on 2 March.
He holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and subsequently got his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lagos. He worked as a Mathematics lecturer at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin, before going into ministry full time in 1984.
He joined the RCCG in 1973, and worked with Pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, as translator. He translated the founder’s sermons from Yoruba into English.
On the death of the church founder, Adeboye was appointed as his successor. The church, which was not well known prior to Adeboye’s ascendance has grown phenomenally to become Nigeria’s biggest, with branches globally in about 190 countries, including more than 14,000 in Nigeria.
