Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Yakubu Mahmood, has stated that the commission will cooperate with the Joint Investigative Panel set up by the Inspector General of Police to look into the ugly incidences that occurred during the rivers rerun elections.
Prof. Mahmood made this disclosure when members of the Investigative Panel paid him a courtesy call on Wednesday.
You will recall that the Rivers State re-run elections was marred by lots of irregularities including the beheading of a police office and his orderely.
The INEC chairman expressed delight at the IGP’s decision to set up the special investigation panel. He said he particularly loved the idea that the panel goes beyond one agency (Police and DSS officers).
The Chairman said that since the last general elections, INEC has conducted 163 more elections ranging from rerun to bye-elections, noting that security agencies had always facilitated success of all its exercises.
He therefore promised the members of the investigative platform full support of INEC in conducting it’s national assignment.
