Christmas was black today as a police sergeant and another lost their lives, when a building collapsed at the Highway police Barracks in Ikeja Lagos state.
The incident was confirmed by the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Adeshina Tiamiyu.
Tiamiyu said the agency had earlier received a distress call on the collapse of a building at the High Way Barracks Opposite Area F, Ikeja.
He added that the toilets and stairways of wing `D’ of the building collapsed at about 4.00am
The LASEMA General Manager, also said that the agency’s officials in collaboration with men of Lagos State Fire Services, the police and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), recovered the two bodies of the dead men, while one of the bodies was identified as Danjuma, the other was undisclosed.
“Their bodies had been deposited at the Mainland Hospital Mortuary, Yaba,” Tiamiyu said.
Commissioner Orders Evacuation Of Building
Tiamiyu also added that the Commissioner of Police Mr Fatai Owoseni had ordered the evacuation of residents living in the affected building and those living in other dilapidated building, during his visitation.
For prevention of future occurrence, Tiamiyu said Mr Owoseni had ordered the demolition of some blocks, and that LASEMA and other stakeholders had commenced the demolition of the affected building.
