Lower league side Heartland have hired Emmanuel Deutsch as their new head coach, the Owerri club announced on Wednesday.
The Naze Millionaires suffered their first relegation from the Nigerian topflight last season as they finished 18th.
And the club’s management expects Deutsch, a Cameroonian, to return the four-time Nigerian champions to the elite league.
According to Ugonna Ozuruigbo, the Deputy Speaker, Imo House of Assembly and the club’s Supervisor, the new gaffer is a man with the wealth of experience to do the job.
‘[Deutsch] has no reason to fail’
“He was recommended by a technical committee following his experience as a former footballer and a coach.
“He has no reason to fail in the assignment because Imo Government has provided all he needs to succeed,’’ the deputy speaker said.
Ozuruigbo then urged Deutsch to search for talented players at the grassroots like Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester United.
But the agony of relegation is still hunting the club’s official. He lamented Heartland’s failure to stay afloat, despite the support they got from the state government.
“Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo invested heavily in the club but it did not reflect in the team’s performance,’’ he said.
Deutsch believes he can deliver
Deutsch, a former chief coach of Botafago FC of Cameroon, promised to heal the wounds of the Naze Millionaires.
The new Heartland tactician would begin his assignment on 19 November,.
