The President said this while opening the Edo State University, Iyahmo, Etsako West Local Government Area built by the state government.
He said the government has made tremendous progress on its electoral promises he made to Nigerians.
“We are pleased that people understand us gradually. What we are here for and what we intend to do. During my campaign throughout this Country, we emphasised the things. Security, economy and fighting corruption. In each one of them, we have a measure of success and that was coupled by our lapse.”
The president also lamented that the nation’s over dependence on oil. He said that the nation is paying the price now.
“I am not deterred over such criticisms because I am focused and I am happy that many Nigerians have started realizing what we are doing and trying to do, to fix this country for the better. Our problem as a nation started when we abandoned agriculture, our hides and skins, cocoa export, palm kernel and engaged in oil business.
“Once petroleum was discovered and developed in large quantity, we threw everything to the dust. Now petroleum is diving from $100 to between 40-50$ per barrel and that is the price we are paying now.
“What have we done to our agriculture, power, rail, road and social infrastructure; education and health? Just check and find out. We have been wasteful. Now, we have to go back to the land, to solid minerals and do a lot of savings. So, we can leave a better country for our children and our great nation.”
“We have made terrible mistakes for allowing ourselves to be cornered into a mono-economy. We are now paying dearly for our mistakes.”
God Saved Nigeria
President Buhari further recalled how God saved the country from collapse despite the enormous resources.
“If the rainy season had failed this year, especially, in the Northern part of the country, I wonder what the future would have been. Because there were no savings, there was no infrastructure, coupled with hunger. I think it is a big recipe for disaster. The situation that we have found ourselves now is because there was no savings. There was no infrastructure. We thank God for saving us from this disaster.”
“We are doing our best because we found ourselves in this great country called Nigeria. Only God can do it. We are blessed with human and material resources.”
