The Kaduna State Government is set to commence the Kaduna Metropolitan Rapid Rail Transport project in 2017. It budgeted over N4bn for the project.
This is contained in the 2017 budget as part of the N24.06bn for projects under the State Ministry of Works, Housing and Transport.
Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i presented a budget of over N215.9bn to the State House of Assembly for approval on Wednesday. It estimated N85.5bn for recurrent expenditure and N130.3bn for capital projects.
The first phase of the intra-city Kaduna light rail project will link Rigachikun with the refinery.
The government also indicated that funds for the rail project would be sourced through a loan from the CBN. .
According to the breakdown, the government further earmarked N1.5bn for the construction and acquisition of new state government administration buildings and N500m for street lights.
Kaduna to Procure CCTV, Drones For Security
In the same vein, the government will procure and install CCTV cameras and drones in strategic areas of the state. This is to to reduce crime and provide adequate security cover in the state.
N1.5bn has been earmarked in the budget for CCTV cameras while N265m is for drones.
The government also plans to spend N193.6m to secure the state from the menace of kidnappers. The money would be used to procure “geo-position interceptor and location of GSM, UMTS system to check trends, intercept and locate kidnappers’ GSM calls.”
The government will also set up a forensic laboratory for N600m. This will help determine substantial evidence in cases that had proved difficult to solve in the past.
