NERC Chairman Nominee Turns Down Appointment

Barely 48 hours after Pauline Tallen rejected her appointment, another presidential nominee, Professor Akintunde Akinwande reject his appointment as NERC Chairman. Just like Tallen, he said he was not duly consulted.

Another nominee of President Muhammadu Buhari, Professor Akintunde Akinwande, has turned down his appointment. Akinwande who was nominated to be Chairman, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC did not show up for his screening by the senate.

Akinwande is reported to have turned down the nomination “because he was not consulted before the nomination was made. He was also not ready to leave his present businesses to take up the job.

According to sources close to him, he was doing a project at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT.

Akinwande did not present himself to the Department of State Services, DSS, for security checks. He also failed to submit his bio-data to the Senate Committee on Power, Stell and Metallurgy.

The committee chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe held screening for the seven nominees yesterday. Only Prof Akinwande failed to show up for the exercise.

This is coming barely 2 days after Mrs. Pauline Tallen, turned down her ambassadorial nomination for the same reason.

NERC Board, Key to Solving Electricity Woes

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the inauguration of the board of NERC was key to solving the problems of the sector. He added that screening had been put on hold indefinitely until the President communicated to the Senate.

“The commission is vital and cannot function without a chairman. We cannot screen them until we have a formal communication from the Presidency.”

Abaribe said since the nomination was made over three months ago, the Presidency should have known whether the chairman-designate would attend the screening or not.

The other nominees for the NERC board are Sanusi Garuba (Vice Chairman), Nathan R. Shatti (commissioner), Dr. Moses Arigu (commissioner), Dafe C. Akpeneye (commissioner), Prof. Frank Okafor(commissioner) and Musiliu O. Oseni(commissioner).
