Mahrez, Oshoala Crowned King, Queen Of African Football

Abuja hosted the 25th edition of the Glo-CAF Awards that had many firsts. Mahrez and Oshoala were crowned male and female players of the year.

Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez named 2016 African Player of the Year

The venue was the International Conference Centre, Abuja, the event, the 2016 Glo CAF Awards Gala.

The awards gala held Thursday with performances by Yemi Alade, Flavour, Femi Kuti and a host of other top artistes.

The event, which was tagged the Silver Jubilee Edition, was the 25th edition of the awards and featured throwback pictures of winners of the past editions of the marquee award: The African Footballer of the Year.

We got to see the first winner, Abedi Pele (1992), multiple and consecutive winner, Yaya Toure, Kanu Nwankwo and others.

The ceremony was hosted and well-handled by veteran actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo (Nigeria) and his co-host Mimi Fawaz, premium show host and presenter of Sports 360 on Vox Africa.

This year’s African Player of the Year award was given to Riyad Mahrez who had a wonderful season leading Leicester City to the English Premier League title in 2016. H e also won the PFA Player of the year. He sure had a good footballing 2016.

He is the first Algerian to win the award.

In second place was last year’s winner, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Sadio Mnae came third.

Youth Player of the Year: Alex Iwobi

Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala is 2016 African Player of the Year for women

Referee of the Year: Bakary Papa Gasama

African Player of the Year (based in Africa): Denis Onyago

Football Leader of the Year: Manuel Lopes Nascimento
